New Orleans: Uncle Lionel B'Day at Spotted Cat

Dollar bills

Uncle Lionel Batiste is a New Orleans music legend. Here you will find some photos from his 75th Birthday. It took place at The Spotted Cat, at the Faubourg Marigny. Lionel, a man of many trades, is well known as a superb jazz drummer. He started playing that instrument in his home neighborhood the Treme. It seems that Batiste use to refer to mostly every one as "my niece" or "my nephew", hence, it is not hard to understand the use of uncle when referring to him. With Sartorial dandyism Lionel is a piece of living history in the streets of Nola.

X-File? Mysterious phenomenon

X-File? Mysterious phenomenon

It was a hazy day on 5/11/2004 we were with some friends in a Williamsburg rooftop. We took some random pictures late at night. This is a crop of one of them. Behind the Empire State building there was this light. The picture is cropped but not doctored or altered in any way. If anybody has any ideas, please let me know, and do contribute with knowledge or hypotheses. Thanks.

Expressionism at Fashion week

Expressionism

Beauty can be amazing, boring, or both. The proto-thespian quality of some fashion endeavors might produce an image with an appearance of timelessness. I guess this is an example, a girl in her twenties channeling the twenties.

Greenpoint Warehouse Fire • Not so accidental it seems.

Greenpoint Warehouse Fire

---------------

There is a painting by Klee called Angelus Novus. It shows an angel who seems about to move away from something he stares at. His eyes are wide, his mouth is open, his wings are spread. This is how the angel of history must look. His face is turned toward the past. Where a chain of events appears before us, he sees on single catastrophe, which keeps piling wreckage upon wreckage and hurls it at his feet. The angel would like to stay, awaken the dead, and make whole what has been smashed. But a storm is blowing from Paradise and has got caught in his wings; it is so strong that the angel can no longer close them. This storm drives him irresistibly into the future to which his back is turned, while the pile of debris before him grows toward the sky. What we call progress is this storm.

Sholem's poem on the Klee painting was written for Benjamin's twenty-ninth birthday --
